An implant supported denture is a type of overdenture that is attached and supported by implants. Implant supported dentures are becoming more popular among patients who are tired of the traditional removable denture. Patients can be candidates for implant supported dentures when they do not have any teeth (or have defective teeth beyond repair that need to be removed), but have enough bone in the jaw to support the implants.
Implant supported dentures can be placed on the upper or lower jaw. One of the major benefits of implant supported denture is that they can be removed easily if needed, but still have a firm support that allow patients to laugh, talk and eat without worrying that their dentures will fall out, become loose, or move around.
What does getting implant supported dentures involve?
The process of getting implant supported dentures requires two phases. The first phase is preparation of the jaw for implant placement. Once the implants are placed, time will need to pass to allow the implants integrate to the jaw bone and heal. This process can take up to six months. The second phase will be to prepare and fabricate your new denture with all the parts needed to attach it to your implants.
Highly accurate impressions (molds) and measurements are taken and used to create your custom denture. Several “try-in” appointments may be necessary to ensure proper shape, color, and fit. At the final appointment, Dr. Basta will precisely adjust and place the completed denture, ensuring a natural and comfortable fit.
Should I use a denture adhesive?
Absolutely not! Because your denture is attached to implants, it provides you the fixed support that you once seeked when you used the traditional removable denture.
Can I make minor adjustments or repairs to my denture?
No! You can do serious harm to your denture and to your health by trying to adjust or repair your denture. Implant supported dentures have many tiny parts can only be cared for by Dr. Basta. Any repairs or adjustments made by you can seriously damage your denture and compromise the integrity of the attached implant components, and possibly the implants. If you feel that you need repairs or adjustments to your denture before you scheduled recare visit, see Dr. Basta immediately. In many cases, Dr. Basta can make necessary adjustments or repairs, often on the same day. Complicated repairs may require that the denture be sent to a special dental laboratory.
How do I care for my denture?
You will be given care instructions for your new dentures. You will need to remove and clean your denture at least twice a day. You should also clean around the implants and their attachments. Dr. Basta can demonstrate how to properly clean around the implants and their attachments. Selecting a balanced diet for proper nutrition is also important.
Proper cleaning of your new dental appliance, good oral hygiene, and regular implant maintenance dental visits will aid in the life of your new dentures.
